Despite ending the Primera Division season with a tally of goals six greater than the previous year, Cristiano Ronaldo was forced to relinquish the Pichichi Trophy to Lionel Messi after the culmination of the campaign on Sunday.
Ronaldo had taken his total from 40 to 46 when compared to last term, yet Messi broke new ground in Spanish football by reaching a half-century of goals.
The Barcelona maestro, of course, also surpassed Gerd Muller's European season record of 67 strikes, and could further increase his haul in the final of the Copa del Rey next week.
Although Messi can, once again, reflect on a sublime personal season and Barca can end the campaign on a high, it will be a year tinged with disappointment after Real Madrid streaked to the Spanish title.
Real became the first club to break the 100 point barrier in La Liga owing, in the main, to the influence of Ronaldo. And Jose Mourinho believes the exploits of the Portuguese forward are worthy of the Ballon d'Or, ahead of Messi.
"Cristiano has to win the Ballon d'Or, not because he has been the top goalscorer, he was that already last season, but because his goals have delivered a title," Mourinho told Portuguese TV station SIC.
"Messi scored 50 goals that weren't worth anything, in the same way that Cristiano scored 42 last season that didn't stand for anything.
"He hasn't been able to win the Pichichi and I believe he should be compensated with the Ballon d'Or."
