Dutch star Edgar Davids believes new England boss Roy Hodgson is right to build his team around Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

The former Barcelona, Juventus and Milan hero thinks England's chances rest upon the form of the talismanic Reds skipper, and Davids is adamant Hodgson should play to Gerrard's strengths this summer.

Hodgson named Gerrard as his Three Lions captain when he announced the Euro 2012 squad last week, and the Dutch legend was pleased to see the Anfield skipper given the armband.

"The important thing for me is that Hodgson has named Gerrard as the new captain," Davids told the Mirror. "I think Gerrard is amazing and can do a great job."

Davids spent a brief spell in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur, but the former Ajax player saw enough in the Champions League to be convinced of Gerrard's special talents.

"Gerrard is passionate and he leads from the front. At times he has lifted Liverpool to great wins almost single-handedly," said Davids.

"I think you have to play to his strengths and build the whole team around him. He can drive the England team like no other player."

Liverpool have four players in Roy Hodgson's Euro 2012 squad, Andy Carroll, Steven Gerrard, Stewart Downing and Glen Johnson, and the former-Liverpool boss has also named Jordan Henderson on his standby list.

The 31-year-old Reds midfielder was in contention for the captaincy along with Scott Parker, Frank Lampard and Joe Hart, but Gerrard was given the role. The Anfield midfielder has 90 caps for his country but missed much of Liverpool's campaign through injury.
