Arsenal are ready to end their pursuit of Rennes midfielder Yann M’Vila – and instead turn their attention to Manchester City’s Nigel de Jong, according to the Daily Mail.
Reports surfaced last month that Arsenal had finalised a deal for M’Vila believed to be worth a club record £17.7 million.
However since then reports about the French youngster’s switch to the Emirates have quieted significantly, while Arsene Wenger insisted there was no deal being done.
The Gunners have plenty of resources in midfield but suffered a spate of injuries last term, with Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, Mikel Arteta and Abou Diabby all missing some or all of Arsenal’s games last term.
Alex Song is entering the final year of his contract with Arsenal and has been linked with a move away from north London, with Inter Milan said to be interested.
De Jong was a key man for Manchester City during the 2010/11 season as he helped them lift the FA Cup, however he has been forced to watch on from the sidelines for much of this season, meaning Arsenal may find it easy to convince him to swap Manchester for London.
QPR boss Mark Hughes is also reportedly keen on linking up with De Jong once more having signed him during his spell in charge at City, but it is believed the Dutch international would prefer a switch to the Gunners.
