Chelsea and Tottenham are pondering moves for Newcastle striker Demba Ba, whose £7 million release clause is activated today for a period of two months, reports the Daily Mirror.

The 27-year-old striker scored 16 goals for the Magpies last season, and struck up a sound partnership with fellow countryman Papiss Cisse in the latter part of the campaign, to help fire Alan Pardew's men into the Europa League next year.

Newcastle are bracing themselves for a stampede of offers during the Senegalese international's private transfer window, with Blues owner Roman Abramovich seeing Demba Ba as a potential Stamford Bridge replacement for Didier Drogba.

Meanwhile, Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is on the lookout for a cost effective replacement for Emmanuel Adebayor, whose season long loan spell at White Hart Lane came to an end.

The Togolese star impressed in north London, but Tottenham have accepted that a permanent move for the want-away Manchester City star is not possible due to Adebayor's astronomical £170,000-a-week wages.

Demba Ba is currently earning around £50,000-a-week at St James' Park, but Newcastle have been unwilling to negotiate a new and improved deal for their marksman after only one season with the club.

Their reluctance has now paved way for the likes of Chelsea and Spurs to make cut-price moves for the African ace, should he decide to leave Tyneside.
