Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes teammate Steven Gerrard was England's best player at Euro 2012.
Carragher also backed his club captain to lead England to the next World Cup in Brazil, and thinks Gerrard's commanding performances in central midfield stood head and shoulders above his teammates.
Roy Hodgson's side were beaten on penalties by Italy, but Cesare Prandelli's team dominated the match, with Juventus star Andrea Pirlo pulling the strings. But Carragher thinks his Liverpool teammate could have done the same, if Gerrard was afforded equal time and space as the Italian midfielder.
"If Gerrard gets that amount of time or space in a game," said Carragher. "He could do exactly what Pirlo did."
The Reds midfielder led by example in Ukraine and Poland, providing three assists from sweeping right-wing crosses as Hodgson's side reached the quarter-finals. And Carragher believes Gerrard was by far and away the best English player at the tournament.
"Steven Gerrard was England's best player by a long way," said Carragher. "There's no debate about that. He's been the captain and I'm certain he'll carry on as captain until we get to Brazil."
England begin their World Cup qualification campaign against Moldova on September 7, before facing Euro 2012 Group D opponents Ukraine four days later.
And England boss Roy Hodgson has confirmed that the old guard, including Gerrard, John Terry and Ashley Cole, will all have a role to play as they look to qualify.
