Giggs wrecks Beckham Olympic dream
Ryan Giggs took David Beckham's Team GB spot
Stuart Pearce decision to omit Dacvid Beckham from his Team GB squad for the London Olympics this summer came after the former England Under-21 boss was left with a straight choice between the ex-Manchester United midfielder and Ryan Giggs.
Beckham was surprisingly dropped from the 18-man squad yesterday despite his efforts in first helping to secure the games for London in 2005 and his presence at the torch lighting ceremony alongside bid leader Sebastian Coe in Athens in May.
Pearce is allowed to name three over-23 players for his squad and has reportedly opted for Giggs, Manchester City’s Micah Richards and Liverpool’s Craig Bellamy.
Now the Guardian report that Beckham and Giggs were left vying for one slot after Richards was included as extra defensive cover, with Pearce opting to give the Welshman his first taste of a major international tournament rather than reward Beckham’s endeavours.
Beckham, who earned 115 caps for England, a record for an English outfield player, was hoping for a glorious finale to his international career at the Olympics in his home city, but will have to settle for an ambassadorial role which could see him take part in the opening ceremony.
For Giggs the games represent a chance for the Manchester United icon to play in a major tournament for the first time in his career having never qualified for a World Cup or a European Championship with Wales.
Elsewhere in the Team GB squad, Jack Rodwell is thought to have been left our after a series of injures wrecked his season last time round, while Pearce’s conclusion that one of the over-age members of his squad must be a forward, accounting for Bellamy’s inclusion, meant that Frank Lampard, Adam Johnson and Joe Cole were ruled out of the equation.
Jack Butland is expected to be included despite travelling with England to Euro 2012, while Arsenal trio Aaron Ramsey, Kieran Gibbs and Henri Lansbury are all rumoured to be in line for a call-up.
The full squad is expected to be announced early next week ahead of a friendly against Brazil at the Riverside on July 20.
