United & Barcelona set for friendly

Manchester United will face Barcelona in a pre-season friendly in Gothenburg on Wednesday, 8th August.

The two clubs announced the fixture following the success of last year’s match, which took place in Washington DC and saw the Red Devils claim a 2-1 victory.

However, the two meetings prior to that came in Champions League finals, with the Cantalan giants claiming victory on both occasions in 2009 (2-0) and 2011 (3-1).

The friendly will be Tito Vilanova’s first opportunity to make his mark on a great European rival, after the former first-team coach took over from Pep Guardiola at the end of last season.

"Manchester United against Barcelona is one of the top fixtures in world football and we are delighted to work with GotEvent to bring this match to the beautiful city of Gothenburg,” noted chief executive David Gill.

"We have a large following throughout Scandinavia and it's great that this match will form part of our preparations for the new season."

Both teams will be looking for perfect preparation in Sweden, after losing their domestic crowns in 2011/12.

Manchester City ended the dominance of Sir Alex Ferguson’s side in the Premier League, winning the English title for the first time in 44 years, whilst Barca lost their crown for the first time in four years when Real Madrid claims a famous La Liga title.
