Stuart Pearce can expect the name of David Beckham to dominate proceedings when he names his 18-man squad for the Great Britain Olympic squad on Monday - but not for the reasons most had expected.
It was widely anticipated the former England captain, who has been an active part of the London 2012 bid and promotional team from the off, would be rewarded with one of three over-age player slots in the final party.
But news leaked last week he would not be making it beyond the 35-strong shortlist and Pearce rang the veteran on Wednesday night to inform him he was out. Instead, Pearce is understood to have opted for Welsh duo Ryan Giggs and Craig Bellamy, as well as his former Manchester City charge Micah Richards.
