It was three years ago today that the most expensive transfer in history took place.
Cristiano Ronaldo transferred from Premier League champions Manchester United to Real Madrid for the astounding sum of £80million.
It dwarfed the previous by £23million – Brazilian star Kaka's move to Real from AC Milan – and pitted him against the other player being called the world’s best, Lionel Messi of Barcelona.
It has been quite a relationship for CR7 and Los Merengues fans, sometimes it gets complicated and boils over into a few boos or sniping comments, but his time there so far has generally, in individual terms, been better than anyone could have imagined.
Ronaldo and Messi have vied for the Pichichi every season since the Portuguese’s arrival in La Liga and the powerful forward was victorious in 2010-11 when he scored a then record of 40 goals in the season.
Records are something that Ronaldo seems to disdain because he is breaking them often – he was the fastest man to get to 100 goals in La Liga when he made it in 92 games; Ronaldo is the only player to have scored against every opponent in a 20-team championship; he holds the record for most games scored in throughout a single league season with 27.
Messi soared to incredible heights last season in goalscoring terms, but it was done in the year that Jose Mourinho and Ronaldo finally got the better of their Catalan rivals.
The illusive La Liga title was finally sealed late last season when Real travelled to Camp Nou and came away with a decisive 2-1 win – no prizes for guessing who scored the winner.
Three years have flown by in a flurry of goals and, after finally sealing the league championship, it is easy to see Real’s two Portuguese main men in Ronaldo and Mourinho leading the historic club to even greater triumphs in the future.
