Emmanuel Adebayor's protracted transfer to Tottenham will hasten Manchester City to make a move for Arsenal captain Robin van Persie, it has been claimed.

Adebayor scored 18 goals during his loan stint at White Hart Lane last season, but Spurs were expected to decline the opportunity to complete a permanent deal due to the 28-year-old's excessive wage demands.

However, Spurs are now set to break their rigid wage ceiling in order to accommodate Adebayor's £170,000-a-week salary and capture his signature for a fee of £5 million.

According to The Sun, Van Persie's personal problems with Adebayor have been standing in the way of a potential move by City for the former, and Roberto Mancini is aware the situation can only be resolved if the Togolese is sold.

The former Arsenal teammates have been on bad terms since clashing on the pitch shortly after Adebayor moved to Manchester in a incident that prompted the FA to ban the City striker for three games.

Adebayor's imminent move to Spurs will now spark City into action with regards to Van Persie, Mancini will reportedly make an initial bid of £15 million for the wantaway Arsenal star.
