Ferguson confident of Van Persie capture

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has reportedly told friends he is confident of winning the race to sign Arsenal captain Robin van Persie.

A report in The Mirror claims the Old Trafford boss believes the Gunners’ top scorer will choose the Red Devils over rivals Manchester City and Serie A champions Juventus.

Arsene Wenger would be loath to see his talismanic striker leave Emirates Stadium to play under old rival Ferguson, but Van Persie looks almost certain to leave.

The Holland international released a statement earlier this month confirming he would not be signing an extension with his current contract, which runs out in less than a year.

Roberto Mancini’s City have been mooted as the most likely destination, but Ferguson reportedly feels the opportunity for Van Persie to team up with England striker Wayne Rooney will be the decisive factor in the estimated £25million deal.

The 28-year-old scored 37 goals for the Gunners last season and won the Premier League Golden Boot ahead of Rooney with a tally of 30.
