It was billed as a match-up between two of football’s individual superstars, but there was only ever one man in it as Cristiano Ronaldo’s Real Madrid handed a 5-1 beating to David Beckham’s LA Galaxy.
And, in truth, it wasn’t the Portuguese winger who made the difference on the night at The Home Depot Centre, with Angel Di Maria stealing the show on a night of fantastic football in California.
He created the first goal for compatriot Gonzalo Higuain, and the game wasn’t even 10 minutes old when the Argentine winger made it 2-0 with a thumping strike from distance.
A Beckham free-kick got the Galaxy back in the game on 23 minutes, with David Junior Lopes tapping the ball home after a header back across goal.
However, Jose Maria Callejon finished a flowing counter attack 13 minutes later to make it 3-1.
Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Mesut Ozil were all introduced in the second-half, but it was goals from Alvaro Morata and Alex Fernandez that put a gloss on the scoreline for the La Liga champions in-front of 30,317 fans.
