Barca & Madrid win pre-season clashes

Published Add your comment

Barcelona and Real Madrid showed they will be the teams to beat in Europe this season, bringing an end to their pre-season preparations with comfortable 2-0 victories against Dinamo Bucharest and Celtic respectively.

For Tito Vilanova, in his first spell as manager following Pep Guardiola’s decision to walk away from the post at the Camp Nou, the win has concluded a successful first summer with the Blaugrana, with three wins – against Hamburg, Raja Casablanca and Bucharest – and two draws – against Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United.

The latest victory came courtesy of goals from Lionel Messi, who has notched five in pre-season, and Ibrahim Afellay, with the Dutchman scoring in injury-time to complete the victory. Barca also welcomed Spanish striker David Villa back into the side, with the former Valencia star returning from a leg break sustained last year.

Real Madrid were also in top form as they beat Scottish opponents Celtic in the final game of their pre-season tour in America.

Goals from Jose Callejon and Karim Benzema proved to be the difference for Los Blancos against the Bhoys, who are red hot favourites to retain the SPL title following Rangers’ demotion to the Third Division.

Things aren’t likely to be so easy for last season’s La Liga champions, who know the Catalan giants will be after their crown.

Preparations couldn’t have gone much smoother however, with the latest win cementing their place as one of the top teams in Europe.
