Xabi Alonso set for Premier League return?

Premier League clubs are reported to be on ‘high alert’ amidst claims in Spain that midfielder Xabi Alonso could be leaving Real Madrid.

Sport, a publication based in Barcelona, claims that the former Liverpool star is resisting talk of a new contract at the Santiago Bernabeu, with his current deal set to expire in the summer of 2014.

The press report goes on to claim that Alonso will consider offers to move away from the capital next summer, with Italian giants Juventus leading the chase for his signature.

However, talkSPORT claims that last season’s undefeated Serie ‘A’ champions will face a number of challengers in the race to land the player’s signature, with English clubs keen on the 30-year-old central midfielder.

If you believe the bookmakers, then it’s Liverpool who could be lining up a sensational return for the player, who spent five years at Anfield between 2004 and 2009.

Alonso would fit seamlessly into Brendan Rodgers’ free-flowing football side, and could be a crucial cog in the club’s bid to return to the top four and Champions League.

Arsenal are second-favourites in the betting alongside PSG, and manager Arsene Wenger would be eager to utilise Alonso’s experience in a midfield that could contain both Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey next season.

Next on the list is Chelsea, who are valued at 18/1 to bring Alonso to Stamford Bridge. With owner Roman Abramovich spending big once again in west London, money wouldn’t be an issue, and unlike Liverpool they have Champions League football on the agenda.

Whether Roberto Di Matteo would be able to persuade the player to move to the King’s Road is up for debate, but he would certainly add depth to the Blues’ midfield.

Both Manchester clubs come behind Juventus and ‘Any Chinese Side’ in the SkyBet odds, with a competitive 25/1 that either Roberto Mancini or Sir Alex Ferguson will be able to bring the player back to England.

Alonso has always kept Liverpool close to his heart since leaving Merseyside, and his connection to the club means a move to Old Trafford is extremely unlikely. The Red Devils will have to look elsewhere.

City certainly have the money to try and lure Alonso to the Etihad Stadium, and with last season’s Premier League title under their belt, they have proven trophy credentials. Alonso could be the man to take the club to the next level, but with Jack Rodwell just signed, it’s unlikely that the Citizens will spend on another player in the same position.

Spurs have no price available in the current market.
