It appears that, while the Premier League has been away for three months, not a lot has changed. Ending last time round with an utterly breath-taking crescendo that justified the naming of the 2011/12 season as the finest of the Premier League era, the new campaign is only one day old yet there has already been plenty of thrills and spills.

Brendan Rodgers' revolution at Liverpool got off to the bumpiest of beginnings with a 3-0 defeat against West Brom, while Tottenham's new coach Andre Villas-Boas hardly had the best of starts either in going down 2-1 to Newcastle. Throw in a couple of heavy defeats for Norwich and QPR, and the opening day made for excellent viewing indeed.

Aside from the results there was also some excellent goals, so take a look at the finest strikes from the first day of what promises to be an excellent new season.
