Premier League champions Manchester City started the season with a win, coming from behind to beat new-boys Southampton in a 3-2 thriller at the Etihad Stadium.

Carlos Tevez, Edin Dzeko and Samir Nasri scored for the hosts, who had Sergio Aguero stretchered off and David Silva miss a penalty. Rickie Lambert and Steven Davies scored for the Saints.

Chelsea also showed their title credentials Sunday, with a comfortable 2-0 win over Wigan. New signing Eden Hazard inspired the Blues, but it was Branislav Ivanovic and Frank Lampard who scored the goals, the later from the penalty spot.

West Bromwich Albion got the win of the day on Saturday, thrashing ten-man Liverpool 3-0. Zoltan Gera, Peter Odemwingie and Romelu Lukaku scored the goals for the Baggies, although Shane Long missed a penalty after Daniel Agger brought him down and saw red.

Newcastle showed last season wasn’t a fluke with a 2-1 win over Spurs at St. James’ Park. Hatem Ben Arfa’s penalty proved the difference after Demba Ba and Jermain Defoe traded goals.

Swansea City got off to a great start under Michael Laudrup, thrasing QPR 5-0 at Loftus Road thanks to a brace of braces from Michu and Nathan Dyer. Scott Sinclair grabbed the other.

Fulham won by the same scoreline against Norwich, with Mladen Petric scoring twice on debut for the Cottagers. Damien Duff, Alex Kacaniklic and Steven Sidwell got the other goals.

West Ham started life back in the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Aston Villa. Captain Kevin Nolan scored the only goal of the game.

Finally, there were two draws on the opening day, with Arsenal and Sunderland failing to inspire in a 0-0 at the Emirates Stadium, whilst Reading salvaged a point in injury-time against Stoke thanks to Adam Le Fondre’s penalty. Michael Kightly gave the Potters the lead.
