Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs insists the signing of Robin van Persie sends out an important message to their rivals that they are still major contenders for trophies.
The Red Devils finished last season without any silverware after they were pipped to the Barclays Premier League title by Manchester City on goal difference. It was the first time since 2005 Sir Alex Ferguson's side had not picked up a trophy but the arrival of Van Persie in a £24million deal from Arsenal has added extra firepower.
"It [the van Persie signing] sends out a big message," said Giggs.
