Chelsea have landed full-back Cesar Azpilicueta from Marseille for an undisclosed fee, it has been confirmed.

Azpilicueta finalised his move to the Blues this morning according to a statement on Marseille’s official website, and is set to train with his new team-mates today.

“Azpi's move to Chelsea is done,” read the statement. “Following Vincent Labrune and José Anigo's trip to London on Tuesday, the negotiations between OM and the English club were finalised on Friday and the Spaniard signed his contract.”

The 22-year-old made 69 appearances for Marseille having moved to France from Osasuna in 2010, and also participated in Spain’s failed Olympic campaign this summer.

Azpilicueta will compete with Branislav Ivanovic for a starting spot at right-back after Jose Bosingwa was allowed to leave Stamford Bridge earlier this summer.

Ivanovic has scored twice so far this season to help the Blues pick up maximum points from their opening two Premier League fixtures. Azpilicueta is available for selection ahead of their next game against Newcastle on Saturday.

Chelsea formally announced the deal soon after Marseille’s confirmation.

“Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Cesar Azpilicueta,” the statement read.

“The 22-year-old right-back, who recently represented Spain at the London Olympics, arrives at Stamford Bridge following a two-year spell in France's Ligue 1 with Marseille.”

The capture of Azpilicueta marks Chelsea’s fifth signing of the summer, with Marko Marin, Oscar, Eden Hazard, and brother Thorgan Hazard already on board. A deal for Wigan’s Victor Moses is expected to be completed in the coming days.
