Race for the Golden Boot: August

Three games in, and already some of the main contenders for the Premier League Golden Boot are moving towards the top of the table.

Carlos Tevez, last year's winner Robin van Persie, and Chelsea striker Fernando Torres have all started the Premier League season in fine form, and should be in contention come the end of the campaign.

Robin van Persie may have swapped north London for Manchester, but, on the pitch, the end result remains the same - the Dutchman continuing to find the back of the net with unerring regularity.

Four goals from the opening three fixtures is an excellent return, but RVP has company atop the Golden Boot leaderboard at this early stage.

New Swansea signing Michu has joined the Welsh club from La Liga, but has adapted to life in the Premier League with ease, scoring all types of goals for the Swans at the Liberty Stadium, and finds himself level with Van Persie on 4 goals.

With the upcoming international break acting as a natural respite, GMF looks back at the contenders mounting an early charge for this season's Golden Boot...

Robin Van Persie - Manchester United (4 goals)

The Dutchman has four goals in just two league starts, including a hat-trick against Southampton, and the 2011/12 winner looks an excellent bet to retain his crown.

Michu - Swansea (4 goals)

The Spaniard joined Swansea from Rayo Vallecano in the summer, having been tracked by a number of Premier League clubs, and the rangy midfielder has enjoyed a stunning start to his Swans career, scoring against QPR, Sunderland and West Ham.

Carlos Tevez - Manchester City (3 goals)

All seems to be forgiven at the Etihad Stadium, and Carlos Tevez is back among the goals for Manchester City. The stocky striker looks hungrier than last year - although he has lost a lot of weight - and is likely to challenge RVP for the trophy.

Fernando Torres - Chelsea (2 goals)

The Chelsea striker is revelling his role as the club's main forward, repaying Roberto Di Matteo's faith with a spate of early goals, and Torres has targeted a record tally this season. But the Spaniard's fragile confidence is a worry for the Blues, who may find themselves light up front as the season wears on.

Hatem Ben Arfa - Newcastle (2 goals)

Ben Arfa is unlikely to be on this list for long - he specialises in the spectacular rather than the straightforward - but the Magpies attacker forms part of a lethal front three along with Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse.

It's early days, but who do you think will win the Premier League Golden Boot this season?

These five stars are setting the pace, but surely Wayne Rooney will enter the picture once he recovers from injury, and Arsenal pairing Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud will also be looking to make a dent in the scoring charts.
