Barcelona star Lionel Messi is the most valuable player in football, according to a poll conducted by GiveMeFootball.

Messi, 24, won 50 percent of the total vote - with over 35,000 fans believing the Argentina international holds a greater transfer value than the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar.

Ronaldo came second to Messi once again, with the Real Madrid forward afforded the support of 27 percent of the fans polled, while Chelsea's Fernando Torres was surprise third place.

The Spanish striker moved to Stamford Bridge for a British record £50 million in 2010, and 11 percent of fans would seem to believe that his value has increased since leaving Liverpool for London.

Neymar, meanwhile, was next in line with seven percent, while the Brazilian represents the player in the poll most likely to be sold in the not too distant future, given his want to play in Europe.

Robin van Persie was sold by Arsenal to Manchester United for £24 million last month, but only three percent of voters believed he is football's MVP, while new teammate Wayne Rooney fared even worse.

The 26-year-old striker won a meagre two percent of the vote, and will surely ask himself how he is valued lower than Torres, given the dire form shown by the latter for the majority of his Chelsea career.
