Goals of the Week: September 15-16
The very best goals from the weekend just gone
Domestic football came back with a bang over the weekend after the international break; in fact there were more incidents in the Premier League alone to keep fans talking until Champions League football returns this week, let alone all the drama from Europe and beyond.
There were handshake rows, ridiculous sending-offs, points won and lost, and of course, plenty of great goals.
GMF is here as ever with the weekly run-down of the best goals scored over the last couple of days – which effort do you think is the goal of the weekend? Have we left any stunners out? Leave your comments below then sit back, relax, and enjoy some special efforts from the weekend just gone.
Lukas Podolski, ARSENAL v Southampton
Arsenal had it fairly easy at the weekend as Southampton allowed them space to weave their pretty patterns at the Emirates Stadium – but Lukas Podolski needed no such help in spanking a beautiful free-kick into the net from 25 yards to put his side 2-0 up and on their way to a 6-1 win.
Nick Powell, MANCHESTER UNITED v Wigan
Sir Alex Ferguson branded Powell the new Paul Scholes after Manchester United’s 4-0 win against Wigan on Saturday – and it’s easy to see why when his scoring goals like this. A carbon copy of the Ginger magician when he was in his pomp.
Theirry Henry, Columbus v NEW YORK RED BULLS
When stepping away from the major leagues in Europe it can be easy for a footballer to let his mind wonder – Thierry Henry now appears to be obsessed with scoring the most beautiful goal possible before hanging up his boots. This stunning effort from a corner kick is about as good as it gets.
Dimitar Berbatov, FULHAM v West Brom
A typically brilliant Berbatov goal. The former Tottenham and Manchester United striker bagged a brace on his debut for Fulham, and while his second came from the spot his first showcased his delightful finishing and laconic stroll in all its glory.
Paul Konchesky, Wolves v LEICESTER
Most people remember Paul Konchesky for one thing. Ok two things. His mother insulting Liverpool fans while he was still playing on Merseyside and his brilliant goal in the FA Cup final for West Ham against the Reds in 2006. Now with Leicester, Konchesky showed he still has something left to offer by spanking in a stunning effort from distance.
Neymar, SANTOS v Coritiba
Every week there appears to be another brilliant goal from Neymar and this week the Santos star was at it again as he netted with a fine, if fortuitous, solo effort.
Jermain Defoe, Reading v TOTTENHAM
Jermain Defoe is in the form of his life at the moment for club and country, and his second effort against Reading demonstrated just that as he charged from the half-way line before slamming his angled shot home.
