Fernando Torres could have returned to Liverpool

Liverpool explored the possibility last season of bringing Fernando Torres back to the club from Chelsea, it has been claimed.

Torres left Anfield for Stamford Bridge in January 2011 for a record-breaking fee of £50 million, but has failed to replicate the free-scoring form he showed on Merseyside.

The Spaniard has scored only 15 goals in 72 appearances for Chelsea and, last season, suffered a drought which lasted for five months and led to speculation that he could be sold.

According to the Daily Mail, then Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli kept a close eye on the situation of Torres at Chelsea, and hoped to sanction a summer move for the 28-year-old old.

It is reported that Comolli, in February of this year, was convinced by a prominent member of the Liverpool dressing room to attempt to bring Torres back to Anfield, and the Frenchman set about planning a proposal.

Comolli, however, was sacked by Liverpool in April which seemingly put paid to any potential move for Torres, with the club's owners instead favouring the recruitment of younger players.
