Brad Friedel has branded Fabian Barthez ‘Ignorant and disrespectful’ for suggesting that he didn’t deserve to be picked ahead of rival goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
Despite splashing around £12 million on Lloris over the summer Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas insisted that Friedel would remain as the club’s number one after a string of fine performances of late.
That seemingly angered both Lloris and France national manager Didier Deschamps, who insinuated the Former Lyon keeper would consider his future in north London immediately if he didn’t play regularly.
Barhtez weighed into the row earlier this week, sayong of Lloris: "He’s one of the five best goalkeepers in the world.
"He is faster than Friedel, he jumps higher and he is very strong mentally.
“What is happening now is incomprehensible, but I'm not concerned. He will become the centre-piece of the club. Hugo is a calm guy, a good worker.
“Tottenham will not let him stay on the bench for a long time.”
Now Freidel has taken to Twitter after taking exception to Barthez’s comments, saying the Frenchman was ‘out of order’ for getting involved in the dispute.
The American wrote: “Just saw Barthez comments. I normally don't comment on such crap but when disrespected by someone I don't respect I must.
“Barthez was ignorant, disrespectful and out of order to mention my name.”
Lloris was handed his first start for Spurs in their 0-0 draw with Lazio last night, while both keepers are in contention for a starting spot for the north London club’s game against QPR on Sunday.
