David Luiz signed a new five-year contract at Chelsea, the club have confirmed.

Brazil defender Luiz was less than two years into the five-and-a-half-year deal he penned when joining the Blues in January 2011.

But the European champions moved to tie the 25-year-old down until 2017 and confirmed on Saturday evening they had done so.

Luiz has reportedly attracted interest from Barcelona in the past and was linked with a move to the Nou Camp over the summer.

However the Brazilian centre-back has repeatedly pledged his allegiances to the Blues in the past, and now looks set to stay put for some time.

The 25-year-old has made 59 appearances for the west London club, scoring five goals in the process, and said he was delighted to commit his long-term future to the club.

'I am very happy to sign a new contract with Chelsea,' he told

'It is a great club and I look forward to winning more trophies here. I want to play for a long time at the top level - which is what playing for Chelsea means. I love everything about the club and especially the fans, who have made me very welcome and given me great support.'
