Lionel Messi is now the second highest paid footballer in the world, just one place behind former Barcelona team-mate Samuel Eto’o according to Spanish paper AS.
Messi was revealed to be the highest earner in football by Forbes in May thanks to his lucrative off-pitch sponsorship deals, however in terms of his weekly wage from football, the Argentinian maestro lags behind Eto’o, who picks up around €20 million-per-year from his current club, Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala.
According to AS, Messi has a clause in his contract which rewards him for every trophy Barcelona win, and thanks to their successes under former boss Pep Guardiola, the 25-year-old’s wage packet has rocketed to €18 million per season.
Barcelona president Sandro Rosell revealed last week that he was pushing for Messi to sign a new contract extension that would keep him at the club for the remainder of his career.
That could mean Messi finally topples Eto’o at the top of the earning charts according to AS, with his bonus clauses set to be improved even further should he sign on the dotted line.
In a recently published list based on footballer’s salaries, Messi’s current earnings were put at €10.5 million, placing him in 9th place behind the likes of Eto’o, Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who recently signed a lucrative deal with Paris Saint-Germain.
Messi’s main rival for the title of best player in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo, reportedly takes home slightly less than the Barca forward, earning €10 million a year.
