Injured Vidic out for eight weeks
Manchester United News: Nemanja Vidic out for two months
Nemanja Vidic will be out of action for eight weeks after undergoing surgery on his knee, Manchester United have confirmed today.
The centre-back missed United's 2-1 victory over Liverpool on Sunday after feeling as though his knee was not up to the task of playing, however after the game Sir Alex Ferguson insisted that he could be availlable for the game against Tottenham this weekend.
Now though the club have confirmed that the Serbian defender went under the knife this week after tests on his knee revealed an under-lying problem that required an operation.
A statement on Manchester United's statement read: "Nemanja Vidic has had a meniscus operation on his right knee and will be out for around eight weeks.
"Sir Alex, as a precautionary measure, rested Vidic at the weekend, after he complained of tightness in his knee, however, further medical investigation revealed the underlying problem.
"The central defender was operated on this week and will be sidelined for about eight weeks."
The 31-year-old missed much of last season with a similar problem he picked up in United's Champions League tie against Basel.
With Chris Smalling and Phil Jones out injured, United look short at centre-back especially given Rio Ferdinand's history of injury problems, something which could result in midfielder Michael Carrick stepping into defence once more as he did earlier this season.
