An exclusive GiveMeFootball poll has found that Iker Casillas and Steven Gerrard are regarded as the two best captains in world football.

The Spanish stopper racked up 35% of the 84852 total votes placed on Facebook, giving a clear indication that the Real Madrid star is well regarded throughout the world of football.

Liverpool skipper Gerrard was a clear second in the poll, collecting 25% of the vote from supporters of the Reds, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Barcelona.

Serbian star Nemanja Vidic, who has today been ruled out for eight weeks at Old Trafford, came third in the poll with 10% of the vote.

Indeed, the mid-table positions were hotly contested, with Argentina skipper Lionel Messi (9%), Chelsea legend John Terry (8%) and Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo (7%) separated by the smallest of margins.

In a surprising turn of results, Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany – who led the club to their first Premier League title in 44 years last term – finished last of the selected players on the list with just 1% of the vote.

The option of ‘other captains’ received 5% of the vote, coming ahead of the Belgian international at the Etihad Stadium.
