Liverpool legend reveals Reds' Premier League striker target

Ex-Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has claimed that Newcastle United striker Demba Ba will be on the club’s radar in the January transfer window.

Ba, who was available for £7.5million in the summer, will again be on the marker for a knockdown fee because of a clause in his contract with the Toon, according to The Daily Mail.

A lack of striking options means manager Brendan Rodgers might have little choice but to strengthen in the position at Anfield at the first available opportunity, and the Senegalese hitman would fit the bill perfectly at Liverpool in the eyes of Lawrenson.

“Demba Ba at Newcastle will be another one that Liverpool have a look at in January. Alan Pardew has made public the fact that he has that £7.5million release clause and I was surprised at that at first,” the former Reds star wrote in his Daily Mirror column.

“But then, after the problems being created by Ba’s agents and the people around him, I just wonder if it is a shot across their bows from Pardew to make it clear that he will not be dictated to by anyone.”

Ba recently voiced his frustration at being on the bench at the start of the season, but has bounced back to score twice against Everton in a 2-2 draw and then the winner against Norwich in a 1-0 win.

However, other Premier League clubs have been linked with moves for the player in the past, meaning competition could be fierce if Liverpool are willing to meet the release clause fee.
