Manchester United midfielder Nick Powell is excited to live up to high expectations after being labelled the 'next Paul Scholes'.

Powell admitted there 'probably will never be another Scholes' but the former-Crewe star is looking forward to giving it his best shot.

Sir Alex Ferguson said he sees the 18-year-old midfielder as a potential long-term successor for Scholes, and Powell underlined his huge potential with a fantastic goal against Wigan on his Old Trafford debut.

"For someone like [Ferguson] to say he thinks you can do that is amazing to hear," said Powell to Mancunian Matters.

"The expectations of you are there, but it's fulfilling that expectation which is the challenge, especially when you consider that there will probably never be another Scholes.

"What he has achieved in his career is more than most people can dream of - to achieve even half of what he has would be brilliant. Hopefully I'm on the right path."

The England under-19 international is likely to be given an opportunity to impress Sir Alex tonight, as Manchester United take on Newcastle in the Capital One Cup.

Darren Fletcher could also be in line for his first 90 minutes in a Manchester United first-team shirt for a long time, after the Scotland international recovered from his long-term bowel complaint.

United then welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Old Trafford on Saturday, but Sir Alex Ferguson will have to do without Nemanja Vidic, after his captain was ruled out for two months following a knee operation.
