Lampard wining Chelsea fitness race

Published Add your comment

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard is winning his fitness battle ahead of this weekend’s clash against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

The England international midfielder missed the Blues’ 6-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night with an ankle injury, and fears were beginning to grow that the 34-year-old might be out of the highly-anticipated clash against Arsene Wenger’s Gunners.

However, reports in The Evening Standard claim Lampard has been doing light training under the supervision of the coaching staff, and manager Roberto Di Matteo is hopeful that he’s able to travel to north London.

Daniel Sturridge appears less likely to be involved though, with the striker missing the last three games with a persistent hamstring problem. He’s rated as 50-50 to make the trip, which leaves Fernando Torres as the only recognised senior striker in the squad.

The Spaniard was on target in the win over Wolves at Stamford Bridge in midweek, and Chelsea fans will hope that can transfer to form in the Premier League against an Arsenal side that have been impressive in defence this season.
