Barcelona midfielder Alex Song will succeed at Camp Nou, that's the opinion of his former Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger.

The 25-year-old made the £15million switch from the Emirates Stadium last month, a transfer that was met with surprise from parts of the wider football world.

After seven seasons nurturing and developing Song's game, the Frenchman is well placed to pass comment on the potential of his old protege.

Wenger maintains that the Cameroon international has the quality needed for La Liga, while also offering Barca boss Tito Vilanova advice on how best to deploy his new signing.

"He will succeed at Barca, and something tells me that he will play in central defence," the Gunners boss told Beln Sports. "No matter who's by his side, he will be good in this role."

With almost 200 Arsenal appearances under his belt since his arrival in north London from Bastia in 2005, Song developed into one of the most highly rated midfielders in the Premier League.

But, at Barcelona - under Pep Guardiola at least - the Catalan club have a tendency to play their holding players at centre-back, a tactic used to accommodate Yaya Toure during his time in Spain, and now Javier Mascherano.

However, in a recent interview, Song stressed that he didn't want to be compared to former players: "I can't compare myself to Toure," he told El Mundo Deportivo. "He's a great player, I respect him a lot, but didn't came here to be the new Toure, just to be myself.
