Barcelona president Sandro Rosell insists Lionel Messi could never become 'sad' at Barcelona.

His statement is a not-so-subtle jab at Cristiano Ronaldo, who earlier this month revealed he is 'unhappy' with life at Real Madrid.

The Portuguese forward has since refused to clarify the reasons behind his public proclamation, but insists it is not related to potential contract renewal discussions.

Rumours suggest it could be linked to Madrid's perceived slight against Ronaldo last month - the Bernabeu club reportedly failed to back Ronaldo's candidacy for this year's Ballon d'Or.

And Barca president Rosell has now weighed into the debate. The Nou Camp chief is eager to tie his best player down to a new contract, and revealed he could never see Messi becoming unhappy in Catalonia.

"Messi could never become 'sad' at Barcelona," said Rosell. "He is very happy. He is from Barcelona and he feels Barcelona in his heart. I cannot see this happening. Maybe this happens at other clubs, but not here."

Rosell also revealed he wants Messi to retire at Barcelona, and the three-time Ballon d'Or winner, along with teammate Xavi, is set to sit down for contract talks with the Barca president.

The Nou Camp side have a 100% record so far this season, winning all five of their La Liga matches. The Catalans sit eight points clear of last year's champions Real Madrid - who have only won two of their opening five fixtures.

The Lionel Messi versus Cristiano Ronaldo debate is set to heat up again in the next few months, as the two go head-to-head for the Ballon d'Or in November.

Messi's teammate and UEFA Best Player in Europe winner Andres Iniesta is also a candidate, but the accolade is expected to go to either Messi or Ronaldo.
