Manchester United and Arsenal are set to go head-to-head in the race to sign Raul Albiol, according to reports.
The Daily Star claims the Red Devils and Gunners are both keen to add the 27-year-old full-back to their ranks, after he fell out of favour under Jose Mourinho at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Albiol, who has 36 caps for Spain, played for Valencia and Getafe before signing with Los Blancos in 2009. However, his opportunities have steadily decreased over the past two seasons, with just 10 appearances in La Liga last term.
Sir Alex Ferguson faces another defender crisis at Old Trafford, with Nemanja Vidic, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling all on the sidelines for Manchester United.
The paper also claims that the Scottish boss has concerns over Rafael’s long-term suitability to the right-back position, whilst doubts over Rio Ferdinand’s fitness are another concern for the Manchester United boss.
Arsenal chief Arsene Wenger is keen to add the versatility of Albiol to his side, and with Bacary Sagna unsettled at the Emirates Stadium, a position at right back could become available.
The French full-back has endured dreadful luck with injuries in north London, and a new start away from Arsenal is claimed to be an option.
