Former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola has been tipped to take the reins at either AC Milan or Inter next year by his former coach at Brescia, Carlo Mazzone.

Guardiola took a sabbatical at the end of last season owning to exhaustion, having won 14 trophies during four years as Barcelona - including two Champions League triumphs.

It is unknown how long the 41-year-old will take out of the game before returning to management, but speculation about his next destination remains rife.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich reportedly remains keen on the Catalan, having initially wanted to install him as at the long-term successor to Andre Villas-Boas.

It has also been claimed that Sir Alex Ferguson has identified Guardiola, along with former rival Jose Mourinho, as a leading contender to replace him as Manchester United boss when the Scot leaves Old Trafford.

However, a move to Italy could be on the cards for Guardiola - at least according to Mazzone - who can see the former Brescia midfielder joining AC or Inter next season.

“I haven’t heard from [Guardiola] in a while, but I don’t think he wants to stop coaching at his young age,” Mazzone told Il Sussidiario.

“I think he’ll work in Italy one day. I don’t know when, but I have this impression.

“He phoned me once and told me that he’d come to see me. I asked whether that would be as a tourist or as a coach of an Italian team. He said both.

“I think he could be working in the city of Milan next year, but I don’t know whether at Inter or Milan. I can’t see him with any of the Roman clubs.”
