Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson has revealed why he chose the club over Liverpool in the summer transfer window.

The 23-year-old Icelandic international was tipped to join the Reds following Brendan Rodgers’ move from Swansea City to Anfield, but instead opted for White Hart Lane under new manager Andre Villas-Boas.

His initial impact has been relatively small in north London, but Sigurdsson is confident the former Porto boss will get the best out of him at Spurs, and that the club’s ambition was the key factor behind his decision to join the club.

“When you look at the players that are here, they are fantastic. It’s an environment where you can improve. There’s a new training ground and plans for a new stadium,” he told talkSPORT.

“The ambition of the club is very high and things going on inside the club are great. The club finished fourth last season and they are aiming higher this season. It’s a great club so it wasn’t a hard decision.”

The failure to land Sigurdsson was one of many transfer disappointments for Liverpool in the summer, with Rodgers failing to bring Clint Dempsey to Merseyside on deadline day. He also joined Spurs.

And, with such strength in depth at the Tottenham Hotspur manager’s disposal, Sigurdsson is confident the club can return to the Champions League, which is where he wants to play his football.

“Every footballer wants to play in the Champions League, it’s the highest stage. Tottenham were very unlucky last year that they didn’t get in it when Chelsea won the trophy,” he added.

“We’re in the Europa League now and the ambition this season is to try and get a Champions League spot.”

Liverpool are also looking to challenge for a return to the Champion League this season, and will need to improve on their shaky start to the season.
