Manchester United are said to be interested in landing AC Milan starlet Stephan El Shaarawy, according to Corriere dello Sport.
El Shaarawy has started the new season excellently and scored four goals in six games - somewhat in contrast to his team who sit in 11th in Serie A with just two wins from their first six games.
According to Corriere dello Sport, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has received favourable reports from his scouting team who have been keeping a close eye on the 19-year-old, and could be preparing to make a move during the January transfer window.
Billed as one of the most exciting young talents in Serie A, El Shaarawy has already earned an international call up and made his debut for Italy against England in August this year.
Able to operate in central midfield and just behind the main striker, El Shaarawy could be the creative spark Manchester United are looking for as their unconvincing start to the season continues.
The Red Devils lost their second game of the season against Tottenham on Saturday evening, and despite winning four league games on the bounce following their opening day defeat against Everton, there have been concerns over the level of United’s performances.
United right-back Patrice Evra lamented his side’s performance in the first half of the Spurs defeat, and warned his team-mates they need to up their game or face missing out on the title for the second season running.
"We put on the Manchester United face only in the second half against Spurs and this is not enough if we're to win the title," he told reporters.
"We must make sure in the Champions League and away at Newcastle we are back to the winning mentality we showed in the second half.
"That's why I say the problem was inside our heads. It was not tactics, it was not tiredness. You don't play a second half like that then make an excuse that you are tired. It's just about your head, we didn't start well in that game."
