Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes have been left behind for Manchester United’s Champions League group H game against CFR Cluj on Tuesday.

The veteran pair both started in Manchester United’s 3-2 defeat against Tottenham at Old Trafford on Saturday, with Giggs being substituted at half-time for Wayne Rooney.

United scraped to a 1-0 win in their first Champions League group outing last month against Galatasaray, and are looking to avoid a repeat of their doomed campaign last year which saw them exit at the group stages for only the third time in 17 years.

Along with Giggs and Scholes, Michael Carrick has also been left behind for the trip to Romania, as has Antonio Valencia who missed the defeat on Saturday with an ankle injury.

Jonny Evans is available for the game despite limping off against Spurs, however long-term injury worries Ashley Young, Nemanja Vidic, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are all still sidelined.

Youngsters Michael Keane and Scott Wootton travel with the 21-man squad after impressing in United’s 2-1 Captial One Cup victory over Newcastle last month, while Wayne Rooney travels in the hope of starting alongside summer signing Robin van Persie for the first time this season.

Manchester United squad v CFR Cluj:

De Gea, Lindegaard; Büttner, Evans, Evra, Ferdinand, M.Keane, Rafael, Wootton; Anderson, Cleverley, Fletcher, Lingard, Nani, Powell, Tunnicliffe; Hernandez, Kagawa, Rooney, van Persie, Welbeck.
