Jose Mourinho has revealed he is still in contact with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich – and used his friendship with the Russian billionaire to secure the loan signing of Michael Essien this summer.
Abramovich took Mourinho to Stamford Bridge from Porto as one of his first acts as Chelsea owner in 2004, and the Portuguese coach repaid the faith by securing the Blues’ first league crown in 50 years in his first season at the club.
Mourinho went on to deliver a further league title, as well as success in the FA Cup in 2007 and a League Cup double in 2005 and 2007, before leaving the cub under a cloud later that year amidst rumours of a falling out with Abramovich.
Speaking in a wide ranging interview with CNN, Mourinho, now with Real Madrid after a spell in Italy with Inter Milan, insists he has a ‘great’ relationship with Abramovich, and revealed the Russian helped him snatch Michael Essien from under the nose of another club this summer.
“We are in touch a lot, and the last example is Michael Essien was going to another club and when I did (gestures to telephone call) 'please leave it to your friend' he left to his friend," Mourinho said.
"We have a great relationship in fact," he added.
