Sir Alex Ferguson was a tad befuddled prior to Manchester United's defeat against Tottenham on Saturday evening after mistakenly confusing Gareth Bale with Batman actor Christian Bale.

The 70-year-old is unlikely to have predicted such a dark night would descend on Old Trafford as Spurs claimed victory, and made himself look like a bit of a joker when he made the gaffe in a pre-match interview.

When asked about the dangers in the Tottenham side, the Manchester United boss highlighted Bale and Aaron Lennon as key dangers, although accidentally swapped the name Gareth for Christian.

Bale - Gareth not Christian - scored a fine goal for Spurs as they stunned United at Old Trafford, with the Welsh winger netting the second in a 3-2 victory for the north Londoners.

Jan Vertonghen had opened the scoring for the visitors before Bale doubled the advantage, while Nani pulled a goal back for United shortly after half-time.

Clint Dempsey then made the 3-1 before Shinji Kagawa got United back within touching distance to set up a frantic finale against against Andre Villas-Boas' side.
