Lionel Messi doesn't deserve to win the next FIFA Ballon d'Or as he has only won one minor trophy this year, that's the view of his former Barcelona team-mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Paris Saint Germain striker was speaking at a pre-Champions League press conference, ahead of the Ligue 1 side's clash against FC Porto on Wednesday evening, where he gave his verdict on the prestigious trophy, set to be announced at the turn of the year.

"Messi had a fantastic season but he has not won that much and he has already won the Ballon d'Or three times," Ibrahimovic is quoted by Eurosport.

"It depends whether you reward an individual or a collective work."

The Swedish international played alongside Messi at the Nou Camp in 2009/10, and whilst he remains a huge fan of the Argentine star, he argues that perhaps it is time for someone else to be recognised.

"Xavi is still playing at a high level, Iniesta also had a great season, they won the Euro while Messi has not won anything, just the King's Cup.

"Messi has won the Ballon d'Or three times, it's now someone else's turn to win it."

The award was merged with the World Player of the Year gong in 2010, and is now widely regarded as the biggest individual accolade a player can be honoured with. Next year's recipient will be unveiled on January 7, 2013.
