Arsene Wenger has revealed he's "exceptionally happy" to see Jack Wilshere return to action for Arsenal.

The England international played 63 minutes for Arsenal under-21's against West Bromwich Albion on Monday afternoon, but Wenger admitted he'd be foolish to try and rush the 20-year-old back into the first-team.

Wilshere has been out of action for almost 15 months with ankle and knee injuries, and the Arsenal boss was delighted to see him back in a Gunners shirt after so many setbacks.

"We are pleased about Jack but we have to take our time to get him slowly back," said Wenger on talkSPORT.

"We are very happy and we must be exceptionally happy but he has been out for 14 months so let's be serious and not get caught up in cloudy media expectations."

The midfielder did not train with Arsenal's first team on Tuesday morning, but that is thought to be just precautionary after such an extended period out injured.

Wilshere's return will come as a major plus for England boss Roy Hodgson. The upcoming international match against San Marino will definitely come too soon for the Arsenal midfielder, but it's a huge boost to the see Wilshere - who was heralded as a future England star - back on the pitch and on the road to selection.
