Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye has revealed he turned down a chance to join Tottenham over the summer.

Cabaye has impressed since joining Newcastle in 2011 from Lille, and has attracted reported interest from Manchester United.

Tottenham spent much of their summer looking for a replacement for Luka Modric, who left White Hart Lane for Real Madrid towards the end of the transfer window.

Spurs tried and failed with their attempts to land their main target, Joao Moutinho from Porto, with the move collapsing in the final minutes of deadline day.

Now Cabaye has revealed he was offered a chance to swap the north east for north London, but turned down the offer because he felt he was not ‘meant to leave’.

"The offer from Tottenham was to replace Modric," he told French television.

"If I had wanted to leave I would have; I have not left, I was not meant to leave as I am still here and I hope a lot of good things will come out of it.

Newcastle finished just outside the Champions League qualification spots in 5th last year, one place behind Spurs who still missed out on the competition because of Chelsea’s final victory against Bayern Munich.

Cabaye says he is loving life in England so far, and will try and improve in order to help the Magpies, who currently sit in 10th place in the Premier League, go one better than last time.

"For me the Premier League is the best league in the world, you have to work twice as hard and we know about the high tempo in every match,” he said.

“This is what attracted me and I will develop physically."
