“Cristiano is better than Messi”

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is “a more complete player” than his Barcelona counterpart Lionel Messi, according to former Santiago Bernabeu favourite Pedrag Mijatovic.

The former Los Blancos forward, who scored 29 goals in 90 league games during the late 1990s, said the Portuguese forward’s ability to use both feet more comfortably and heading prowess made him a better player than the record goalscorer at Camp Nou.

Messi scored 73 in all competitions for Barcelona last season, but the Montenegrin was adamant that Jose Mourinho’s talisman should be the preference in any choice between the two players generally agreed to be the best in the world.

“They're very distinct players. Their way of playing and moving is different," he is quoted as saying by Goal.com.

“But, for me, Cristiano is better than Messi. He's a more complete player. He's faster, more explosive, he uses both feet, is good with his head.

“For me, Cristiano doesn't have any faults. If I have to choose, I'll go for Cristiano.”

A number of prominent football names, including Brazilian Ronaldo, have had their say on the matter, but it is the Argentinean that has won the award three times to Ronaldo’s one – the last three in a row, in fact.

However, Mijatovic was director of football at the Bernabeu as recently as 2009, so a touch of bias towards the Real Madrid man is perhaps to be expected.
