Manchester United are ready to renew their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund forward Robert Lewandowski ahead of a potential summer switch – something that could spell trouble for out-of-favour duo Nani and Javier Hernandez.
According to the Telegraph, Sir Alex Ferguson will be present at the Etihad Stadium tonight to cast an eye over Lewandowski as he lines up for Dortmund in their Champions League clash against rivals Manchester City.
The Manchester United boss was reportedly interested in landing the Polish international during the summer transfer window, only to be knocked back by Dortmund, who according to the Telegraph turned down a £16 million bid from the Red Devils.
The paper also reveal that Chelsea have been scouting the 24-year-old, who has scored 31 goals in 72 league games for Dortmund.
Lewandowski has earned praise for helping Dortmund claim back to back Bundesliga titles while also leading the line for Poland at Euro 2012 on home soil.
United were able to prise Shinji Kagawa from the Bundesliga club over the summer after the Japanese international revealed he didn’t intend on extending his deal that expired in 2013, a position they could soon find themselves in with Lewandowski.
His contract expires in 2014 and it is believed he has already indicated he won’t be signing a new deal, something that could force Dortmund to cut their losses and sell up in the summer.
If Manchester United are able to lure Lewandowski to Old Trafford it could spell trouble for forward Javier Hernandez, who has fallen down the pecking order in Ferguson’s thoughts, behind Danny Welbeck and summer signing Robin van Persie.
Portugese winger Nani meanwhile is yet to agree terms on a new deal at Old Trafford, and he could be moved on to make room for Lewandowski who can also operate out wide if needs be, with Zenit St. Petersburg in the mix for his signature.
