Michael Dawson and Hugo Lloris were handed both handed starts in Tottenham’s Europa League tie against Panathinaikos tonight.

Lloris has so far only played once for Spurs since his £12 million switch from Lyon over the summer, while Dawson has found himself down the pecking order behind the likes of Jan Vertonghen, William Gallas and Steven Caulker, and came close to leaving the club in the summer. The former Nottingham Forest man will captain the side.

Manager Andre Villas-Boas has stayed true to his word by fielding a strong side, just three days before their next Premier League outing against Aston Villa on Sunday.

Vertonghen continues at left back having featured there in Tottenham’s 3-2 win over Manchester United last weekend – their first win at Old Trafford in 23 years – while Tom Huddlestone is handed a start in midfield ahead of Sandro.

Emmanuel Adebayor returned to training this week but didn’t travel to the game for Greece, with Jermain Defoe and Clint Dempsey leading the line for the north London club.

Spurs could only muster a draw against Lazio in their first Europa League tie last month, and will be looking to secure three important points on the road as they seek to reach the knock-out stages.
