Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has targeted a top four Premier League finish and a trophy this season.

In an interview with the BBC, Gerrard said a return to the Champions League remains a priority, while a trophy is also a realistic aim for the Reds.

Brendan Rodgers's side currently lie 14th in the Premier League, and suffered a 3-2 home defeat to Udinese in the Europa League on Thursday night.

But when asked what the club's targets are for the rest of the season, Gerrard was emphatic.

"Top four and a trophy," Gerrard told Football Focus. "We're six games in. The Norwich win will be the catalyst to push us on."

The Reds beat Norwich 5-2 at Carrow Road on Saturday, Luis Suarez bagging a hat-trick on the same ground he hit a treble last season.

And the Liverpool skipper thinks his side are beginning to hit their straps under new boss Brendan Rodgers.

"I think teams will find it really difficult to play against us and I'm confident we can go on a run of winning games," said Gerrard.

The win at Norwich was Rodgers' first in the Premier League since joining Liverpool from Swansea in the summer.

Rodgers replaced Kenny Dalglish in the Anfield hotseat, and has overseen a period of transition at the club, shipping Andy Carroll and Charlie Adam out, and bringing in Fabio Borini, Joe Allen, Nuri Sahin and several of the club's young academy stars, including 17-year-old Raheem Sterling.
