Manchester United will be desperate to avoid a repeat of last season’s Premier League fiasco at Newcastle United, where they were thrashed 3-0 by a rampant Toon side.

Interestingly, the Red Devils went into that game having lost the previous match at Old Trafford 3-2 to strugglers Blackburn Rovers – this time around it was against Tottenham Hotspur, with the same score.

Manchester United will have greater options at their disposal than during midweek in their Champions League victory over Romanian side CFR Cluj, as Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs will be available once again.

Michael Carrick returns after suffering from a bug and Jonny Evans should be fit again, despite being substituted during the midweek game.

Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie started together for the first time in that game and combined beautifully for the winning goal, so they are expected to remain in the starting line-up.

There are question marks over who will join them up there, however, as Javier Hernandez put in an underwhelming showing, so Shinji Kagawa or Danny Welbeck may come in.

Manchester United predicted line-up v Newcastle United:

Anders Lindegaard; Rafael, Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans, Patrice Evra; Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes, Shinji Kagawa, Antonio Valencia; Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie.
