Liverpool have been linked with a January move for Genoa defender Andreas Granqvist, after scouts were spotted at the Italian club's Serie A clash with Palermo on Saturday, reports Calcio Mercato.

The 27-year-old Swedish international is the latest in a growing list of proposed targets being lined up by the Premier League giants, when the transfer window reopens next year.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has an array of talent in defence, with Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel currently his first-choice pairing at Anfield, and highly-rated Uruguayan stopper Sebastien Coates providing further back-up alongside club veteran Jamie Carragher.

However, with growing concerns over a number of players' ability to fit in with the Liverpool manager's new system - which has an emphasis placed on high-intensity passing, and possession-based football - the club are openly looking for players more accustomed to their attractive style of play.

Granqvist already has Premier League experience, after a brief spell with Wigan Athletic in 2007/08, making 14 appearances for the Latics before moving on to FC Groningen for around £600,000.

In 2011, Granqvist joined Genoa for €2million, signing a four-year deal with the Italian outfit, where he has continued to impress with a string of scintillating performances, reportedly alerting the attention of Liverpool.
