Borussia Dortmund are set to beat off strong competition from Arsenal and Newcastle United in the race to sign Aleksandar Dragovic, according to reports.

The 21-year-old centre back has been linked with a number of top European clubs, including Fiorentina, Stuttgart and Inter Milan, but it appears the Bundesliga champions are poised to land the FC Basel starlet.

TuttoMercatoWeb cite claims in the German press that a deal has been struck between the two parties, meaning the 14-cap Austrian international could by plying his trade at the Westfalenstadion as soon as January.

Dragovic stated his career with Austria Vienna before moving to Basel in 2011, and his performances in the Champions League brought him to wider attention across Europe.

TalkSPORT claimed Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was interested in the player last week, with the Frenchman looking to add some depth to the defence in 2013.

The Gunners currently have Per Mertesacker, Thomas Vermaelen and Laurent Koscielny available at the Emirates Stadium, but one injury could expose fragility in such a central position.

Newcastle United - linked with the player last week as well - have already found themselves facing injury problems this season already, with Steven Taylor the latest casualty at the Sports Direct Arena.

Manager Alan Pardew is also trying to guide the Magpies through a successful Europa League campaign, but is currently stretched to the limit at the back.

Both Arsenal and Newcastle would have found good reason to add Dragovic to their ranks, but it appears the player is destined for BVB.
