Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi is well on the way to becoming the best player in El Clasico history after his double on Sunday night.

Cristiano Ronaldo also bagged a brace in Camp Nou, but Real Madrid could not make up any of the eight points that their Catalan rivals have over them in the Primera Division.

It was a classic battle between the world’s two best players and a winner could not be called, but Barça’s Lionel Messi did further manage to cement his legendary status at Camp Nou and in this most famous of fixtures in European club football.

Some of the game’s greatest ever players have graced El Clasico but, come the end of the season, he could well have risen above the current holder – Real Madrid legend Alfredo di Stefano on 18.

Messi bagged his 16th and 17th goals on the night, moving ahead of former los Blancos captain Raul on 15 – Messi is only 25 years old, so is surely destined to become the highest El Clasico goalscorer of all time.

However, Cristiano Ronaldo would not be outdone in the records department and his two goals made him the first player in history to score in six consecutive Clasicos.

It was an historic night all round and the debate over who the world’s best player is (can there be any options other Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo?) still raging, still undecided.
